With one of the most eagerly anticipated cricketing summers in recent times fast approaching, what better way to prepare than by looking back at some of the most iconic moments in this famous ground’s rich 205 year history.

Our brief was to create a nostalgic animation that spanned 205 years, touching on key milestones, emotions and stories. We began by working with the marketing team at Lord’s to create a timeline for the film, mapping out the evolution of the ground from its humble 1814 beginnings (that saw a duck pond and sheep in the outfield), through to the individual performances and team triumphs that will forever be ingrained in Lord’s folklore.

A History of Lord’s

With our timeline established we used paintings, photos, and match footage from the Lord’s archive to construct a visual storyboard, creating key frames for each era and sporting moment. With the key frames agreed, our designer then re-created each iconic moment and background as a bespoke digital illustration before animating subtle movements and adding multiple layers to create the distinctive ‘boiling’ effect.

To complement the visuals and heighten the sense of nostalgia we edited archived sound recordings taken from match commentaries, documentaries and player interviews. Finally, we added sound effects throughout the film to try and convey an ambience that we hope every Lord’s spectator can recognise.

Our Producer at A+C Studio said:

“It is always a real honour to work with the team at Lord’s. This animation, in particular, was a joy to produce as we were able to really immerse ourselves in the traditions and history of the ground, getting access to incredible archive footage of childhood heroes like Graham Gooch and Beefy. It has culminated in a really beautiful animation that we’re all very proud of”
